Steve Davis
The Northampton Jazz Festival 2018 is fortunate to have one of the greatest living Jazz artists right nearby (the Hartford area) who regularly and generously shares his talent and fellowship with us. We’re speaking of none other than Steve (“Stevie-D”) Davis, one of the most in-demand Jazz trombonists in the world. His impeccable swing, intonation and lyrical ideas make him equally at home as a leader or a sideman. If you wonder who he’s played with, this Who’s Who list will tell you he’s the Real Deal. One listen and you will be struck by the spirit, depth and intelligence that is the mark of great a jazz storyteller.
As a sideman, Davis is featured on over 100 recordings. In recent years, “Stevie-D” (a nickname given to him by the late Jackie McLean) has worked regularly with Larry Willis’ Quintet, Freddie Hubbard, Slide Hampton and The Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Big Band (featuring James Moody, Jimmy Heath and Roy Hargrove), The Jimmy Heath Big Band, Ron Carter Big Band, Cecil Payne, Horace Silver and Wynton Marsalis’ Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, powerhouse Art Blakey, the elegant Benny Golson and Hank Jones, and the hard swinging Harold Mabern and Eddie Henderson, among so many others.
His over 20 recordings as a leader is a prodigious output in this day when an artist is constantly in competition with not only every other form of entertainment but every great artist that has come before him. We know you’ll enjoy.
